The Internet is developing powerful new capabilities as it moves to Web 3.0 technologies and standards.

There are significant benefits for developers and users of next generation spatial infrastructures in gaining access to these capabilities.

Program 3 will concentrate on:

  • Improving data structures and standards (through the use of Universal Resource Identifiers for identification of spatial resources on the web; XML schemas and Resource Description Frameworks that permit machine readable code to be controlled by plain English enquiries; and ontologies to permit the complex relationships between datasets and applications to be made so that automated processing can occur)
  • Developing rules and routines for linking federated datasets
  • Facilitating streamlined licencing of resources
  • Assisting with the design of next generation architecture through the use of test beds that will be established in existing operational spatial infrastructures.

Program 3 will not look to develop its own new spatial infrastructures, set out to create new data-sets, or undertake activities that can best be done by the private sector alone.
