The world is entering a new era in satellite positioning. New global navigation satellite systems are being launched.

A national positioning infrastructure that takes advantage of these advances in a way suited to the needs of Australia and New Zealand is a fundamental step toward 'spatial enablement'. Significant economic benefits will accrue with a national positioning infrastructure, adding an estimated 1.1% to 2.1% to Australia’s GDP by 2030 through productivity gains in mining, construction and agriculture alone. Many other sectors will benefit as well such as transport, emergency services, and tourism and recreation.
