Professor Pettit is the inaugural Chair of Urban Science at the University of New South Wales, Director of the newly launched City Analytics Postgraduate Program, Associate Director of the City Futures Research Centre and Smart Cities Director for the CRC for Spatial Information.
His expertise is in the convergence of the fields of urban planning, Geographical Information Sciences (GIS) and Planning Support Sciences (PSS). For the past 20 years, he has been undertaking research and development in the use of spatial information and mapping technologies for envisioning, what if? scenarios across both urban and regional landscapes.
In the context of Smart Cities, the UNSW city analytics team focuses on the application, development and the evaluation of online interactive geographical visualization tools including, advanced spatial decision support systems, city dashboards and datastores. A smart cities approach is undertaken to engage citizens and leads to improve the quality of life for all who traverse urban spaces.
