Using Augmented Reality in Urban Design [4.5.2]
The main objective of this project is to explore how mobile Augmented Reality (AR) could be used to visualise future urban redesign of a city, and to develop a platform that can be used to generate significant research output in the future.
The earthquake damaged city of Christchurch will be used to test the mobile AR platform, but the technology could be used in many other urban environments.
The mobile AR application being developed could be used to give a historical view of a city before an earthquake, to show the stories of people affected, and to give a view of the city as it could be after rebuilding is complete. The key is that people can see a vision of the future in the real world around them. No longer do people have to look at plans and pictures and try to imagine how the buildings will look, they can see them on site beside the real buildings that are still standing.
This is software that runs on a smart phone that allows people to see virtual content superimposed over the real world
