he new ‘Raptor’ active optical crop sensor is ahead of schedule. It has been designed, tested, modularised for field deployment and tested on the field. The successful field test was reported in the journal “Computers and Electronics in Agriculture.” Raptor is an active optical crop sensor which can be used in low light levels, including at night. It uses a new light emitting diode (LED) system attached to the underside of a light aircraft to capture data across a field. This new technique can accurately capture crop and pasture biomass data from heights of 15 to 45 metres so it is effective in undulating fields and in areas containing obstacles, such as buildings or trees.
The research team has published four articles in agricultural and environmental journals in the past quarter.
